Northern Student Education Initiative ( NSEI )
The Northern Student Education Initiative (NSEI) assists Aboriginal and other students from NWT and Nunavut with pursuing post-secondary education, and the transition from a northern lifestyle to a southern urban community.
The program reaches out to students and potential students to further educate them about the benefits of higher education and the availability of support services.
The NSEI provides a student Advisor to help students locate and use resources on campuses and in the community. The Advisor assists students in the following areas:
Social, academic and personal guidance
Acts as a link between students and services available on campuses, as well as with service providers in the local community; particularly services with an Aboriginal focus
Assists in vocational and scholarship exploration for Aboriginal and other students
Advises and assists faculty and staff on issues relation to Aboriginal peoples, Aboriginal culture and Aboriginal education
Assists southern based institutions in developing and implementing long-range Aboriginal recruitment and retention strategies
Acts as an advocate for students on campus to promote understanding, respect and consideration of their learning requirements, needs and career objectives
Liaises with organizations from the NWT and Nunavut who are supporting their students
Supports the growth and development of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal student organizations in organizing social and cultural activities
Meets with students to acquaint them with their institution, program and resources
